(Martin Bourboulon, 2023)
The French film industry has produced some outstanding films this year, including this one- a two-part adaptation of Alexandre Dumas’ classic novel (the latter of which is to be released at the beginning of next year) which is far from your typical action swashbuckler. This version really gives the viewer a contextual insight into the religious tensions between Catholics and Protestants in France in the early 17th century when Huguenots (French Calvinists) were rebelling against religious persecution by Catholics. Lavish and thrilling, the film very much feels like a fresh, grown-up take on a much-beloved tale, with a grounded approach being adopted to portray the period details and some modern touches added in terms of characterisation. The cinematography is particularly notable with one very impressive chase sequence shot from above. François Civil, Vincent Cassel, Pio Marmaï and Romain Duris shine as the central protagonists of D’Artagnan, Athos, Porthos and Aramis with Cassel, Marmaï and Duris bringing out the humourous, witty sides of their characters. I cannot wait for the next part!
